Blogging is becoming more and more prevalent among journalists, experts, and the everyday person. Keeping a successful blog requires some thought.

Blogs are becoming another way that journalists, experts, companies, and the everyday person can share information or pursue writing in a topic that interests them. These topics can range from a person's every day life to writing to nutrition to physics.

However, successful blogs have several things in common. These qualities not only help a blog writer build a following, but also helps a blog writer establish credibility and professionalism in their area of expertise.

Picking a Topic for a Blog

Successful blogs revolve around one specific topic, such as gardening, jigsaw puzzles, or Italian cooking and cuisine. Regardless of what the blog writer is going to write about, it is important to remember the topic and stick to it. Otherwise, it gets very easy to get sidetracked and off topic, which may cause readers to navigate away from the blog.

When deciding on a blog topic, the topic should be focused enough that the blog can be organized sensibly, but broad enough that the writer won't quickly run out of ideas for blog posts. For example, creating a blog about preventing weeds in flower gardens in cold climates is too narrow of a topic; eventually, the writer will run out of ideas for posts and the audience for this topic is small. However, creating a blog to discuss preventing weeds in different kinds of gardens is narrow enough to be organized, but broad enough to enable longevity and a wide audience.

Choosing a Web Host for a Blog

There are many websites out there that will host blogs for free, such as Google's Blogger platform, Wordpress, and Tumblr. These websites offer free hosting or charge a small fee per month or annually to have a writer's blog hosted by the website. Blog hosting websites are also great resources for educators who are trying to incorporate social media and blogging into their classrooms.

For those who are looking to create their own blog site from scratch or are interested in creating an elaborately-structured blog, it may be in the writer's best interest to purchase a domain name and build the website from the ground up. There are many reputable companies who sell web domain names, so the writer should do their research and consider their budget before purchasing.

Maintaining and Promoting a Blog

Once a writer sets up a blog, it is important to maintain the blog and to promote it so that the writer develops an audience for his or her work.

Writers should make sure that they update the blog frequently enough to keep information up to date and to keep readers interested. However, it is not something that should be updated so often that readers are overwhelmed with new information every time they log on. Not updating the blog very often can cause readers to lose interest or forget that the writer's site even exists.

Promoting a blog can be work, but it is important to remember that this is how a writer attracts new readers and contacts. Posting new blog posts on sites such as Twitter and Facebook can help attract new readers, while placing a link to the blog in the writer's email signature can help attract family, friends, and coworkers.

Blogging can be a fun venture for those who like to write and want to share their knowledge of a specific topic. Despite being a lot of work, blogging can help writers build an online presence and possible open doors to new opportunities as well.
